Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
