Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
